In April, the independent crowdfunding publisher Inkshares announced a contest in partnership with the book club/podcast Sword & Laser, looking to further their mission to democratize book publishing. The contest, which ended May 31, selected the five books in the science fiction and fantasy genre that had the highest number of pre-orders, as well as the five books with the highest unique reader counts. This means a total of six books will be published by the company, with the authors receiving coaching from author Gary Whitta, the co-writer of Star Wars: Rogue One.

The six books which will be published by Inkshares are:

  • An Unattractive Vampire, by Jim McDoniel: a comic urban fantasy
  • Practical Applications for Multiverse, by Nick Scott & Noa Gavin: a young adult sci fi horror comedy
  • Ageless, by Paul Inman: a science fiction story exploring immortality
  • The Life Engineered, by JF Dubeau: a fantasy story with sentient robots
  • Lost Generation, by Joseph Terzieva: a dystopian novel involving machines
  • Asteroid Made of Dragons, by G. Derek Adams: a fantasy apocalypse tale

These six books will be part of The Sword & Laser Collection, which means the books will receive branding from the podcast/book club. The Life Engineered and Asteroid Made of Dragons are the two that will debut in the collection, and the authors will be interviewed on the podcast hosted by Veronica Belmont and Tom Merritt.
