Classic Movies Coming Back to the Big Screen

Fourteen movies in one year. That may not sound like a lot, but when you read what movies they are, any movie buff will get excited.

For a second year, Fathom Events partners with Turner Classic Movies to bring “TCM Big Screen Classics”, a series of classic films brought to the big screen as they were meant to be seen. And, as is typical with Fathom Events, each movie has special features: for these, specially produced commentary from either Ben Mankiewicz or Tiffany Vazquez.

The roster for 2017 starts off with a bittersweet return to Singin’ in the Rain in January, just in time for its 65th anniversary. No doubt a shoutout to the late Debbie Reynolds will be included, as this was Reynolds’ first screen appearance. The remaining movies are An Affair to Remember in February for its 60th anniversary set around Valentine’s Day, All About Eve is in March, Alfred Hitchcock’s North By Northwest is early April, The Graduate in late April for its 50th anniversary, chase movie Smokey and the Bandit will be in May for its 40th anniversary, mob classic The Godfather is in June for its 45th anniversary, Some Like it Hot is in June, teen comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High is in July for its 35th anniversary, the groundbreakingly violent Bonnie and Clyde in August for its 50th anniversary, Steven Spielberg’s classic E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial will be in September for its 35th anniversary, the fairy tale comedy The Princess Bride celebrates its 30th anniversary in October, the timeless classic Casablanca will be in November for its 75th anniversary, and the drama about interracial relationships Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner will be in December for its 50th anniversary.

For me, most of these movies I’ve never had the opportunity to see on the big screen: even the ones that came out after I was born, because of the way movies used to be released and where I grew up, it was rare to see them that way. These screenings are even more special to movie buffs, as they will be presented in the original aspect ratio.
